Mom brought a hot water bottle and we covered it in a towel and put it next to where he was sleeping. I remember crying with Mom as we watched over his little body.

Miracleously, he survived, and went on to live for many years. But I never forgot that harrowing night. It was my first experience of watching helplessly while something -- or someone -- struggled to survive. I learned something that night. A hard lesson for an eight year old, but a good education nonetheless.

A few years ago my wife brought home a hamster that belonged to one of her client's children. The kid had grown bored of the hamster, and the poor thing sat completely neglected on a shelf in his room. If it wasn't for his mother coming in to feed it, it would have died and he would not have known the difference. My wife and I looked after that little guy for almost 3 years, until he died at a ripe old age. I was surprised to find myself nearly as saddened by the loss as I had been when my first gerbil died when I was a kid.

Mom brought a hot water bottle and we covered it in a towel and put it next to where he was sleeping. I remember crying with Mom as we watched over his little body.

Miracleously, he survived, and went on to live for many years. But I never forgot that harrowing night. It was my first experience of watching helplessly while something -- or someone -- struggled to survive. I learned something that night. A hard lesson for an eight year old, but a good education nonetheless.

A few years ago my wife brought home a hamster that belonged to one of her client's children. The kid had grown bored of the hamster, and the poor thing sat completely neglected on a shelf in his room. If it wasn't for his mother coming in to feed it, it would have died and he would not have known the difference. My wife and I looked after that little guy for almost 3 years, until he died at a ripe old age. I was surprised to find myself nearly as saddened by the loss as I had been when my first gerbil died when I was a kid.

A hard lesson for an eight year old, but a good education nonetheless.

The kid had grown bored of the hamster, and the poor thing sat completely neglected on a shelf in his room. If it wasn't for his mother coming in to feed it, it would have died and he would not have known the difference. This toy, as a few before, like Tickle-me-Elmo, Furbys, and Cabbage Patch Kids, came out of nowhere and became the hot seller almost strictly by word-of-mouth among the best judges of toys on the planet: kids. Kids are the ones who recognized this relatively simple toy as being fun and fascinating.

The problem for moms, dads, grandparents, aunts and uncles and friends, is that the demand for Zhu Zhu Toys has been significantly higher than the production and shipping capacity of the toymaker. Simply put, there are just not enough of the Zhu Zhu to go around this holiday season. Some online retailers are waiving shipping fees and some are not. If you decide to try your luck at the stores in your town, go armed with the research you have done, and you will know if you have a good deal.
