They have 3 different sensors that they use in order to detect and interact with their environments. Each Zhu Zhu Pet can play over 40 sounds depending on how they're being interacted with. This means that there's a lot of variation in the number and types of interactions from when a child plays with his Zhu Zhu Pet.
Each little hamster has two modes of play. They can be put into "Loving Mode", in which they can be cuddled with and petted, making adorable little cooing sounds all the while. Alternatively, they can be put into "Explore Mode", in which they will zip around exploring their environment. When they're in an environment specialized for Zhu Zhu Pets, they will make sounds appropriate to their location. For example, when they enter their bathroom in they may make tooth brushing sounds or toilet flushing sounds. The number of sounds and interactions that they can make can only help to add to the impression that these are utterly adorable little critters that are absolutely fun to watch just to see what they'll do next.
There are several different Zhu Zhu Pets hamster habitats that can be bought separately and used on their own. However, they can also be combined together in order to create elaborate little hamster cities where children can allow their Zhu Zhu Pets to roam freely. When more than one Zhu Zhu Pet is put together, they will interact in new and fascinating ways, and this can be incredibly fun to watch. Children love to watch their Zhu Zhu Pets zipping around in their little habitats, following all the tubes connecting each play area and reacting to their environment.
Most recently, a new line of the little electronic hamsters has been released especially for boys called Kung Zhu. These hamsters are set up for battle and will attack their enemies in a battle for the sake of the city. These critters have a special battle mode when they face off against each other.
Because they are fun to watch and interact with, these little electronic hamsters have made it onto most kid's wish lists. They're such clever creations, providing such a range of interaction and amusement, that it's not hard to see why they're so popular.
